Maury as a Costume Designer at 16 yrs old!

So today I was like breaking my head on what to blog about and I can't think of anything as I haven't taken pics of Gisela and I since we went out to brunch a couple weeks ago. I tell you, this NYC weather is not helping me in any way.  I was then looking through our blog and was thinking "I have never shared anything about my HS" so let me show you and share with you.  I went to the High School of Fashion Industries (HSFI) in NYC which is the only vocational school in NYC that focuses in fashion, fashion merchandising and arts.  It was one of my best experiences till this day.  All my  fashion teachers were professionals in the industry and they all went to FIT, Parsons or Pratt.  I was extremely competitive and would be enroll in every program that allowed me to design and expand my creativity and design skills.  Here are some pics of a program that I did for a whole year called " The Buskers Fair." I am not sure if they still have this program but it was such an amazing and enriching experience for the 13 HS juniors that participated in it.  We had to design costumes and do a research paper on Medieval times. It was a parnership with the Lower Manhattan Cultural Center which was in the Twin Towers.  They funded the program and provided us with money for all the fabrics and notions we needed. We worked with one of our fashion teachers and a global teacher since it was a fashion/history program.

I remember having an extremely tight schedule with fashion internships and this program all to be done after school. This was like working in one of the couture houses in Paris, NO JOKE!  My teacher, Mrs. James who is still an amazing teacher at HSFI  is still there! WHOA.  This was in 1997 and I was just 16 year's old and making a couture costume gown.

We had to dedicate about 15-20 hours per week after school on this Buskers Fair Program, which was tremendously hard since we had a lot of other school responsabilities throughout the year. For my design, I wanted something extremely glamorous! I wish I had the sketches or upclose pics of this project, but I guess I would have to dig in my house. For now, look at what I did.  It was this gorgeous silk georgette gown that was lined because my teacher didn't want any kind of transparency...we dyed about 20-30 yards of silk and we had to match it with this amazing french lace we found that was also to be dyed to match the dress.  I had padded shoulders on the dress and it had a wired frame crinoline that I had to make as well with bloomers in the bottom since the skirt part of the dress was opened in the middle.  I also made my headpiece of Swarovski crystals and antique lace, an arm bracelet that was really heavy, and the crystal mask too!  I had some old shoes that I took apart and deconstructed them and started doing my own with a leather that I hand painted in silver and covered in the antique lace.  It was so much work as the program lasted the whole year, so you imagine the sweat we went through!

Busker2 Here I am in the middle with the pinkish/nude dress with my best friends from HS- Ana, Annabella, and Yadira and our friend Luis who is a costume designer right now.
Busker2 The best closeup in my computer that I could find.  My eyes were close...geez.  I was a shy little girl.
Busker2 Here are all my friends parading in Lower Manhattan the day of the fair.  We were so proud of this accomplishment despite all the crazy hours we spent together where we wanted to kill one another.  I hope you enjoyed the pictures. If I find more in the house and sketches, I will sure share them with you all!

Have a wonderful friday,

Vogue's Valerie Boster

When I had my lingerie company "Vagin Pouvoir"  I had a meeting with Valerie Boster (Now, Bookings Editor) at Vogue. It was a pretty amazing meeting which I thought the outcome would be for my lingerie and myself to be featured in the pages of Vogue. Like every young designers dream is to get in those pages and be recognized by the legendary Anna Wintour.  I think the main reason it didn't make it was because the name was quite controversial for a conservetative magazine like Vogue. I bet Anna Wintour couldn't agree with the name since most American magazines are not as open and free spirited as the European ones like French Vogue. Valerie has such a nice humbling personality which was refreshing coming from Vogue.  Anyways, she was featured in Vogue.com series "5 days, 5 looks, 1 Girl" and I wanted to share it with you guys incase you guys missed it. I love love her contagious smile, isn't it adorable?

Han Shang So Fierce

When I saw this guy all over the blogs, I was enamored by his jewelry collection, his camel coat and his leopard scarf.  It was the epitome of what Fall 2010 signified.  To me, he is the male version of Kate Lanphear. From his hair cut to the raised collar and his accessories, everything is just super fierce. I haven't had a chance to see all the Pitti Uomo collections in Milan yet nor the Couture ones that growing up were always my favorites to watch. Can't wait to dedicate some time to that.  Do you guys have any favorite male collections so far?

Isn't he so cool?  I would love to see more of him.  Have you guys seem more pictures of him, I tried googling him and didn't have much luck.  All I know is that his name is Han Shang and he is a Chinese Editor.

Have a wonderful day guys,

Lauren Santo Domingo's Rustic Apt

I am pretty sure most of you have seen Lauren Santo Domingo's Chic Manhattan Apt.  She has a series Apt with LSD on Vogue.com.  I personally love some of the pieces she has collected throughout the years of her travels.  Lauren is an editor at Vogue and is coming out with her new e-commerce trunk show venture called "Moda Operandi" You can read more about it in this article that WSJ published last month. I am sure is going to cause a crazy following like Gilt.com.  Anyways, I did enjoy taking a peak of her apt.

Python Perfection

A couple months ago I gave myself these beautiful Lanvin Gold Python Stilettos for my bday. Gisela and I were shopping at Barneys and when I saw these, my mouth dropped.  They are a very simple pair of shoes, but since I am an exotic skin lover I had to get them.  I really love the ombre lucite with steel heel.  I wore them for fashion week, but didn't take pictures of the outfit! I can't wait for this winter to be over so I can strut all my new heels.

One of my favorite NY apartments belongs to Tamara Mellon, CEO of Jimmy Choo.  I am so in love with her Guido Mocafico Snake Photographs that are so rich in color and texture. Since we are in the subject of Python and snakes I had to share it with you guys if you haven't seen it on the Harpers Bazzar issue featuring her apartment in " A Fashionable Life"

Here are some of my favorite Guido Mocafico's snake photographs! I would love to buy some and put them in my apartment. I actually have nothing hung on my walls because I want to start collecting slowly and then put everything together.

In a Reed State of Mind!

One of my resolutions for this year was to cut down with my shoes and clothes spending. Thus far, I have been a very good girl and have avoided shopping so resist the temptation.  Today, I had an excuse to go out shopping as it was my friends daughter's bday party. I went to Zara to the kids section since they have some cute faux fur vest and animal print numbers for her baby.  As I was about to pay for her gift, I saw some shoes staring at me and begging me to pick them up. It was like a battle with my mind and the shoes...do you guys go through this as well? or am I just very weird?   The shoes were 60% percent off, so the shoes won the battle and they made it home with me.  I guess it was because they reminded me of those amazing Reed Krakoff Fur Sandals that  Amanda Brooks wore this past NY Fashion Week.

The Reed Krakoff have 2 buckles and my Zara ones have 1 only buckle.  I can't wait to wear them and I don't feel as guilty as I didn't spend a couple hundreds of dollars on the real Reed Krakoff.

Prom Time!

Hi all!

My niece's prom is this May and I cannot stop thinking about it! lmao.. as if it were my own prom, sheesh! She's asked me to find a dress for her and I'm going mad searching for the perfect one. I just recently spoke at her high school for career day so everyone knows I'm a fashion stylist and editor..so if she looks like someone that belongs on Mr. Blackwell's worst dressed list, guess who will be to blame?? so the pressure is on!

This is me, circa 1992. It was the time of Melanie Griffth's Working Girl and its hit song "Lady in Red." And who can forget Julia Roberts' long luscious, wild red locks and her gorgeous climactic red gown at the opera in Pretty Woman. My look was inspired by both.  When girls were wearing long, fancy, satin dresses, my mom came to me with this ultra sexy red little number. It was perfect!

Looking back to my prom I thought, thank goodness it wasn't an "omg! what was I thinking?!" moment and I want to have my niece feel the same way. I came across, what I think, is quite a superb dress..its by Jovani and I foud it on edressme.com. To me its giving me Marchesa meets Givenchy...but then again, am I crazy? Can this dress go totally wrong?

What do you guys think?

PS: my prom date was not my bf, I didn't have one so my gf set me up with a blind date, Danny I think is his name, wonder where he is today? lol

xoxo!
